Amazon.com, Inc. has reportedly not made any concessions to the European Commission in its attempt to gain approval for its proposed $1.7 billion acquisition of iRobot Corp., the maker of Roomba robot vacuum cleaners. According to media reports, Amazon had until Wednesday to address the Commission’s concerns about potential competition restrictions in the European Economic Area and national markets for robot vacuum cleaners. The Commission had previously stated that Amazon’s dominance in the marketplace could lead to higher prices, lower quality, and less innovation for customers. The regulator now has until February 14 to make a final decision on the deal. In addition to the European Commission, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority have also scrutinized the acquisition. However, the British regulator cleared the deal last year, stating that it would not raise competition concerns in the UK. Amazon agreed to acquire iRobot in August 2022 for $1.7 billion in an all-cash transaction.
