Amazon’s MGM Studios is reportedly in the final stages of acquiring Megan Park’s second film, titled “My Old Ass,” which features Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella. According to an insider with knowledge, the deal is worth $15 million.
The plan for Amazon MGM Studios is to release “My Old Ass” in theaters across the United States and Canada, with international distribution yet to be determined. However, as with all of its titles, the film will ultimately find its home on Prime Video.
Produced by LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara in partnership with Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush, “My Old Ass” had its world premiere screening at Utah’s Eccles Theatre on Saturday evening, which was completely sold out.
In a review of the film by TheWrap’s Ariana Martinez, she wrote that Megan Park’s “My Old Ass” combines elements of young adult storytelling with sci-fi fantasy. The story revolves around 18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) as she confronts her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza) while transitioning into adulthood.
Martinez praised the authenticity of “My Old Ass,” particularly in its portrayal of the dynamics between Elliott and her friends Ro (Kerrice Brooks) and Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler), as well as her brothers Max (Seth Isaac Johnson) and Spencer (Carter Trozzolo). Stella delivers a refreshing and realistic performance as a queer girl who effortlessly charms a cute cashier while ignoring her mother’s calls in pursuit of a good time.
This collaboration between Robbie and Ackerley’s production banner LuckyChap and Amazon’s MGM Studios marks their second major project together, following the success of Emerald Fennell’s satirical film “Saltburn” last year. Distributed by MGM, “Saltburn” grossed an impressive $20 million worldwide and became one of Prime Video’s most-watched titles after its streaming debut. The film received critical acclaim for its cast, including Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosemund Pike, Carey Mulligan, and Richard E. Grant.
Megan Park’s directorial debut, “The Fallout,” featuring Jenna Ortega, Maddie Ziegler, and Julie Bowen, was released on HBO Max in January 2022 to widespread critical acclaim. The film, which Park also wrote, generated significant discussion across various streaming platforms and became the most talked-about direct-to-streaming movie of the previous year.
The deal for “My Old Ass” was negotiated by CAA Media Finance, according to reports.
