Amazon Invests in “Olympus” AI Model to Compete with OpenAI and Google
In the race to develop the most advanced large language models (LLMs), tech giants are sparing no effort. Amazon has now joined the competition by investing heavily in its own model called “Olympus,” aiming to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, according to insider sources who spoke to Reuters.
The secretive project is said to have an extensive training dataset. With a staggering 2 trillion parameters, which determine the output of a model, Olympus is set to become one of the largest models currently in development. In comparison, OpenAI’s GPT-4 LLM has one trillion parameters, as reported by Reuters.
This ambitious endeavor would surpass Amazon’s existing generative AI models hosted on its Amazon Web Services.
While many details about the project remain unknown, Amazon has a significant advantage in the AI world due to its access to vast computing power and server infrastructure. This is crucial as LLMs are notoriously hardware and energy-intensive, as highlighted by Futurism.
Amazon’s Rise in the AI Industry
According to The Information, it is still uncertain when Amazon will unveil Olympus or make it available to the public.
However, with its abundant resources and dominance in web hosting, Amazon has become a company to watch in the rapidly evolving AI industry. The company also demonstrated its commitment to AI by investing $4 billion in Anthropic, an AI startup.
It is important to note that despite having twice as many parameters as GPT-4, it remains to be seen whether Amazon’s Olympus can outperform OpenAI’s popular AI model. Yann LeCun, the renowned AI scientist and Meta’s chief AI scientist, tweeted in September that “a model with more parameters is not necessarily better.”
