Amazon’s Fleet of Rivian Vans Grows to 10,000, Making Over 260 Million Deliveries

Amazon, a major supporter of Rivian, has revealed that it now has 10,000 Rivian Electric Delivery Vans (EDVs) on the road in the United States and Europe. This marks a significant increase from the over 5,000 vans that were on the road in July. Combined, these electric vehicles have made more than 260 million deliveries.

Back in 2019, Amazon led a $700 million investment round into Rivian and placed an order for 100,000 EDVs with an expected completion date of 2024. However, this date was later pushed back to 2030. The company’s fleet of EDVs is part of its Climate Pledge, which aims for Amazon to become a net-zero carbon emissions company by 2040.

To support the efficient charging of these vehicles, Amazon has established a network of 12,000 chargers across 100 delivery stations in the country. Additionally, Amazon utilizes over 15 different electric vehicle models in its fleet, including e-cargo bikes and e-rickshaws.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Rivian was in talks with Amazon to renegotiate their contract, allowing Rivian to sell its EDVs to other companies. Despite this, Rivian continues to perform well compared to other electric vehicle competitors. In the third quarter, Rivian produced 16,304 vehicles and delivered 15,564 of them, surpassing analysts’ expectations.

Amazon is also exploring other clean energy solutions such as green hydrogen and ultra-low carbon electrofuels for its delivery and operations.

It’s worth noting that Eddie Pan holds a long position in Amazon (AMZN) at the time of publication.
