Amazon Takes on Tech Giants with “Olympus” AI Model
In the race to develop the most advanced large language models (LLMs), tech giants are sparing no expense. Amazon is now joining the competition by investing heavily in its own model codenamed “Olympus,” aiming to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, according to insider sources who spoke to Reuters.
Reportedly, the training data for Amazon’s secretive project is extensive. The model is set to have a staggering 2 trillion parameters, making it one of the largest models currently in development. In comparison, OpenAI’s GPT-4 LLM has one trillion parameters.
This ambitious undertaking would surpass Amazon’s existing generative AI models hosted on its Amazon Web Services.
While many details about the project remain unknown, Amazon’s vast computing and server infrastructure give it a significant advantage in the AI world. However, developing LLMs is known to be hardware and energy-intensive, as noted by Futurism.
Amazon’s Rise in the AI Industry
As reported by The Information earlier this week, it is still uncertain when Amazon will unveil Olympus or make it available to the public.
Nevertheless, with its abundant resources and dominance in web hosting, Amazon has become a company to watch in the rapidly evolving AI industry. The company has also demonstrated its commitment by investing $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic.
It is important to note that despite having twice as many parameters as GPT-4, it remains to be seen whether Amazon’s Olympus can outperform OpenAI’s blockbuster AI model. As Yann LeCun, the “godfather of AI” and Meta chief AI scientist, tweeted in September, “A model with more parameters is not necessarily better.”
