Amazon’s fleet of Rivian Electric Delivery Vans (EDVs) has reached a milestone, with 10,000 vans now on the road in the U.S. and Europe. This is a significant increase from the over 5,000 vans that were reported in July. These EDVs have collectively made more than 260 million deliveries.
Amazon has been a key supporter of Rivian, with a stake of over 155 million shares as of the second quarter. In 2019, Amazon led a $700 million investment round into the electric vehicle (EV) company and placed an order for 100,000 Rivian EDVs. However, the expected completion date for this order was later pushed back to 2030.
The fleet of EDVs is part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, which aims to make the company net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. These vehicles operate in over 1,800 cities across the United States and rely on Amazon’s network of 12,000 chargers across 100 delivery stations.
While Rivian remains a prominent partner for Amazon, the company also utilizes other EV models in its fleet, including e-cargo bikes and e-rickshaws. In March, it was announced that Rivian was in talks with Amazon to renegotiate their exclusivity contract, allowing Rivian to sell its EDVs to other companies.
Rivian has been performing well compared to other EV competitors. In the third quarter, the company produced 16,304 vehicles and delivered 15,564 of them, surpassing analysts’ expectations. These numbers align with Rivian’s production guidance of 52,000 vehicles for 2023.
Amazon continues to explore clean energy solutions for its delivery and operations, including investments in green hydrogen and other alternative fuel methods.
