Amazon Plans to Double Same-Day Delivery Sites in Coming Years
In a recent press release, Amazon announced its plans to double the number of same-day delivery facilities in the coming years. This move comes after the company reported delivering over 1.8 billion packages in the same or next day to US Amazon Prime members this year, a significant increase compared to 2019.
To achieve this expansion, Amazon has been working on decreasing the distance between its delivery sites and customers by 15% since the beginning of the year. This will allow delivery drivers, vendors, and selling partners to reach customers more efficiently, ultimately lowering Amazon’s costs.
The company has already made strides in ramping up its same-day deliveries, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. According to its fourth-quarter earnings report, customers in these cities can now receive hundreds of thousands of items within hours.
While the expansion of same-day delivery sites is exciting news for customers seeking instant gratification, it also raises concerns about potential harsh working conditions for drivers. One Amazon driver anonymously shared his experience of feeling overwhelmed and drained during Amazon Prime Day, the company’s two-day summer sale.
In response to these concerns, Amazon assured that the safety of its employees would not be compromised. Doug Herrington, the CEO of worldwide Amazon stores, emphasized that the nature of the workers’ jobs would remain the same despite the faster delivery pace.
As Amazon continues to prioritize speed and convenience for its customers, it remains to be seen how this expansion will impact both the company and its workforce.
