The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, accusing the company of misleading customers into purchasing more expensive Prime memberships when they only wanted to stream videos on Amazon’s subscription video service, Prime Video. Prime Video is a separate product that costs $8.99 per month, while a full Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 per month. The FTC claims that Amazon’s website was designed in a way that tricked customers into signing up for the more expensive Prime membership instead of the lower-cost Prime Video subscription. Amazon denies the allegations and states that it is easy for customers to sign up for or cancel their Prime membership. The FTC’s lawsuit was partly prompted by a report from Insider last year, which revealed that Amazon had concerns about tricking customers into signing up for Prime subscriptions. The report also mentioned a project called Clean Slate, which aimed to make it easier for customers to differentiate between free and paid content on Prime Video. The FTC complaint also alleges that Amazon made it difficult for customers to cancel their Prime memberships.
